Yes, I know, the gas prices in America are too high, and if you are unlucky enough to live in Southern California then you’ve nearing your credit card limit just to fill up. However, if you lived in these following countries around the world you would be selling your left testicle [first born?] for a fill up.
Here are the 5 Most Expensive Gas prices in the World (author’s note, even though the world uses Liters, we translated prices to American dollars and gallons, to prove that you don’t have it that bad.)
5th Most Expensive Gas in the World
London, England $8.96 a gallon. So you can have fish and chips but when it comes to gas they don’t play games. At this price I’d seriously consider investing in a bicycle and helmet or taking a ride on the underground.
4th Most Expensive Gas in the World
Rome, Italy $9.03 a gallon. You can visit ancient ruins right in the center of town, see where Christians were fed to the lions and view the sistein Chapel but make sure you don’t go by car. At over $9.00 it’s no wonder Italy loves the Vespa moped.
3rd Most Expensive Gas in the World
Copenhagen, Denmark $9.24. Not only are gas prices through the freaking roof, but Denmark also has the highest household electricity prices in the world. You can thank this to a nuclear energy ban and poor natural resources. So not only will you not be going anywhere, but you’ll definitely be chopping down some Denmark wood to stay warm.
2nd Most Expensive Gas in the World
Paris, France $9.43. They have the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Champs- Elysees, along with world famous wine and cuisine. They also have an excellent subway system which comes in very handy with gas prices pushing almost $10 a gallon.
And the number one most expensive gas in the world belongs too….
Oslo, Norway $9.85 a gallon. Pushing the $10 mark here is the Norwegians, with their very cold weather and excellent human right laws. Along with their glorious GDP ranking and expansive natural resources, one should wonder why the heck gas prices are so high. I guess when you live in a country that pretty much allows you to do anything you freaking want, you can’t complain.
I suppose 4 bucks doesn’t seem so bad now. Amirite USA?
Now that you feel better knowing that you aren’t paying the most for gas on a global scale, here are the lowest gas prices worldwide.
Fifth Least Expensive Gas in the world
Cairo Egypt $1.24. Pyramid- check, Sphinx- check, Cairo Tower,- check, Super affordable gas prices- double check. Cairo is not only the capital of Egypt and the largest city but also the most populous. Glad to see there are still some place with gas under the $2.00 mark.
Fourth Least Expensive Gas in the World
Kuwait City, Kuwait $0.92. Whoa! Gas for under a buck! No we aren’t in a time warp to the late 90’s. This is what they are paying in Kuwait City. It is no wonder this desert city has a booming economy.
Third Least Expensive Gas in the World
Riyadh Saudi Arabia $0.47. I guess it really does pay to be the leading producer of crude oil. Or at least it saves at the pump. That’s right kids we are paying almost 10 times as much.
Second Least Expensive
Tehran, Iran $0.41. Not only does Iran produce beautiful rugs but they also have crude oil. In fact they are second when it comes to production, right behind Saudi Arabia. Looks like being second isn’t so bad after all.
And the lowest gas price honor goes to…………..
Caracas, Venezuela $0.12. 12 CENTS!!! You can fill up your gas guzzling SUV for $3. In fact it’s less expensive to fill up your tank than it is to purchase milk in Venezuela. It looks like being rich in history, culture and oil is really paying off.
So there your have it. If you didn’t feel bad enough about gas prices, now you know people elsewhere are paying much, much less.

Interesting article with a very cheesy American take on things. Whilst there are extremes, some not mentioned here, it is worth noting that while “gas” is more expensive in western Europe people often spend less than the yanks. This is because typical journeys are shorter and the people are smaller so they have smaller cars not SUVS as in Europe most people only weigh about 150lbs rather than 300lbs.

I Live in England and petrol here is expensive so diesel cars are common. But public transport here is even more expensive than buying petrol.

How do they justify the drop in gas prices. They say less traffic, my back yard faces an interstate and I see more traffic not less.
I remember a news clip from Venezuela that there president stated if Oboma wins he wouldflood the US market with his oil. A short time later the prices started dropping.
Does one thing have anything to do with the other, like I stated I have not seen a drop in traffic.

Its literally amazing a year ago today 12-18-08 the price of gas was 125 percent higher then today My Mother Maxine tahiliani was reminiscing about when the Tahiliani family would take vacations across the vast united states from Califorina to Washington DC and spend less then a hundred bucks on gas my father Mark Tahiliani VI would always have a heart full of bible stories to tell during the trip. Thans again for the info.

you can see that gas prices are more expensive in the Netherlands than in France. Though, Norway is not on this list.

Why would the the US government tell us that they are buying cheap gas. They want us to believe they are getting it really expensive thus charging us. Just like a building contractor, they claim that the materials are much more expensive or how they claim “doubled since last year” and that’s why they charge more. Its bull, cause they know we cant go and find out ourselves. Thats why also they have that whole fight with Venezuela president and out president just to throw people off. Come on USA, we need to think for ourselves, we are the least disciplined country in the world, yet we still bend over and take it.

Something is wrong in your logic, in Europe we buy gas in euros, don’t think that every time the dollar crumbles a bit more we get to pay more for our gas, in the past 2 years here in euroland I’ve seen gas prices increase by about 25% at the local gas station, not about two fold increase seen in dollarland.

Venezuela used to be at 3 cents a gallon before they removed the subsidies.
Gas went from 3 cents to 9 cents overnight and there were riots in the streets, stations torched, people killed…
the current 12 cents is WITHOUT SUBSIDIES.
Don’t ask why it is so cheap there, ask why it is so expensive elsewhere. The record profits of the gas companies (greater profit than any corporation in the history of the world) might suggest a clue…

A friend of mine just visited Venezuela and mentioned to me that the Venezuelan government is selling us gas from their country at those low prices. Why haven’t we heard anything about that here?

It’s very important to note that the cheap countries are where the fuel is gov’t (taxpayer) subsidized. The expensive countries are those where it is highly taxed. The price in the USA is very close to the actual market value.
In China and India, whose consumption is rising rapidly, fuel is subsidized. Not as much as the top 5 but nevertheless consumers there are partially insulated from the rising cost.

You also missed The Netherlands 1.54 Euro per litre here in Amsterdam, which works out to $9.19 a gallon. That’d put it in 4th place.

Venezuela and Iran subsidize their gas, that’s why it’s so cheap. I think it’s a bad idea because it distorts the market. The gas could be sold to other countries instead for a lot of money which can be used in better ways. Instead, there is no incentive to cut down on the use of SUVs etc.

Actually, I’ve made some calculations, and the reference prices for Galp, the biggest gas distributer/seller in Portugal, translate to $9.12 (from the original price of €1.533 per liter).
So that makes Portugal the 4th most expensive country for gas, bumping the UK from the top 5.
